What does Auto Insurance Include?

Automobile insurance is required, by law, on any vehicle that is operated in Canada. The minimum coverage, in Alberta, is to carry third party liability (TPL) and accident benefits (AB).

Third party liability

This coverage will cover damage to another person’s vehicle when you are at fault for the loss. With third party liability coverage, your own vehicle is not covered for damage in the event of a loss.

Accident benefits

This section provides coverage for injuries to the driver and passengers of your vehicle. This is a mandatory coverage and is provided at a no-fault basis to encourage injured people to seek treatments.

Additional coverages can be purchased to cover damage to your own vehicle.

Comprehensive coverage

Covers a wide variety of perils. It does not cover losses caused by collision. Some of the perils covered by comprehensive are fire, theft, vandalism, hail, windstorm, falling or flying objects, animal impact.

Collision coverage

Covers your vehicle for losses caused by a collision with another object or upset (rollover). This would include collisions with other vehicles and colliding with inanimate objects like curbs, posts, rocks, etc.

There are also numerous endorsements that can be added to your policy to best suit your needs and coverage preferences. A few of the more common endorsements are:

Loss of use (SEF20)

This coverage provides a rental vehicle when your vehicle is non-driveable from an insured peril. It will also cover for a rental vehicle while yours is in the shop getting fixed after a claim.

Limited waiver of depreciation (SEF43R/L)

This endorsement is provided on new vehicles only and will provide the owner with replacement cost of the vehicle if it is deemed a total loss. This endorsement is only applicable for a specified period of time from the purchase date of the vehicle.
